In Praise of Kathy Reichs

This week, I managed to corral the whirlwind of energy that is Pamela Fagan Hutchins for a minute or two. Between moving house and bringing out engaging, well-plotted mysteries with impressive speed, she found time to write about her respect for Kathy Reich and her popular heroine.

Who is your favorite female detective?

Kathy Reichs’ Temperance Brennan!

What is it about her that you most enjoy or admire?

She is delightfully flawed and real. She’s an expert in her field, vulnerable in love, and despite her intelligence, strength, and expertise, she often is in over her head when her investigations extend beyond forensic anthropology.

What is your favorite case that she has investigated?

Monday Mourning, about three female corpses in the basement of a Quebec pizza parlor. She battles a stubborn police officer who wants to label them historic and ignore the case. But Tempe realizes they are contemporary, and the case takes off from there, with grisly and psychologically terrifying twists.

If you lived in her time period and hometown, how do you think that you and she would get along?

I think we would get along well. But, like me, she doesn’t have a need for close girlfriends, so we’d get along from arm’s length. We’d be friendly and respectful, but not chatting over long coffees.

Pamela Fagan Hutchins is hard to catch in person these days, but thankfully her suspenseful novels are easy to find! I loved Going for Kona and also really enjoyed her recent Heaven To Betsy, the first book in her Emily series. Pick it up for the compelling mystery and charming romance and you’ll put it down with a new understanding of the joys and hardships of life in the borderlands.

New to Pamela’s wonderful storytelling? Start your adventure with her exciting first series, Katie and Annalise…

She is a recovering attorney and investigator who resides deep in the heart of Nowheresville, Texas with her two household hunks—husband Eric and one-eyed Boston terrier Petey. All three are still reeling from raising a blended household of five, plus pets innumerable. Pamela has a passion for great writing and smart authorpreneurship as well as long walks, her Keurig, and traveling in the Bookmobile, but most of all she loves her readers.
